EU chief Tusk warns China, US and Russia that trade wars threaten ‘conflict and chaos’


US president Donald Trump, Russian president Vladimir Putin and China have been urged to function with Europe to stay away from trade wars and protect against “conflict and chaos”.

European Council president Donald Tusk was talking in Beijing at the opening of a summit involving China and the European Union, just several hours in advance of a summit concerning Mr Trump and Mr Putin in Helsinki.

“We are all mindful of the fact that the architecture of the globe is altering prior to our really eyes and it is our popular accountability to make it a change for the improved,” Mr Tusk said.

Last 7 days, Mr Tusk lambasted the US president’s continual criticism of European allies and urged him to remember who his buddies are when he fulfills Mr Putin.

In Beijing, he explained that Europe, China, the US and Russia had a “widespread duty” not to ruin the world get but to enhance it by reforming global trade regulations.

“This is why I am calling on our Chinese hosts, but also on presidents Trump and Putin, to jointly start out this procedure from a thorough reform of the WTO (Environment Trade Organisation),” Mr Tusk explained.

“There is nevertheless time to stop conflict and chaos.”

Washington imposed 25% tariffs on 34 billion bucks (£25.7 billion) of merchandise in response to grievances that Beijing is hurting American companies by stealing or pressuring enterprises to hand over technologies.

It has also applied tariffs on imported metal and aluminium from allies like Canada, Mexico and the European Union. The 28-nation EU bloc has responded with import taxes on 3.25 billion dollars (£2.5 billion) of US merchandise.
